nutella hazelnut bars

instead of making christmas cookies, i decided i wanted pecan bars. it would be perfect! as i went into the pantry, i saw this lonely jar a nutella staring at me. i thought, oh, that will take those bars to the next level! when i went to grab the pecans, i saw the hazelnuts next to them, which is what nutella is made from. ah-hah! let's use hazelnuts! i love any ooeey gooey bars with nuts, but these bars? let's just say, i had to hold on to my chair when i ate one. :)
ingredients:
- - for the crust:
- 1 stick of butter - softened
- 1/3 cup brown sugar -
- 1 1/3 cup flour -
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder -
- 1/4 teaspoon salt -
- - for the filling:
- 1/2 cup nutella -
- 2 eggs -
- 1/3 cup brown sugar -
- 1/2 cup dark corn syrup -
- 3 tablespoons melted butter -
- 1/4 cup flour -
- 2 cups hazelnuts - chopped
instructions:
- preheat the oven to 350 degrees. line a 9x9 baking dish with aluminum foil, allowing the foil to hang over the sides (great for lifting the bars easily out of the pan, after baking). lightly spray with cooking spray.
- in a bowl, blend together the butter and brown sugar.
- in another small bowl, blend together the flour, baking powder and salt. blend the flour/mixture into the butter/sugar mixture. the mixture will look grainy. pour into the prepared pan and press into the bottom of the pan.
- bake in the preheat oven for 15 minutes or until lightly browned. allow to cool slightly.
- spoon the nutella onto the crust. slather evenly across the crust. set aside.
- in another medium sized bowl, beat the eggs until fluffy. beat in the brown sugar, dark corn syrup, and melted butter until blended. add in the flour. stir to combine. fold in the chopped hazelnuts.
- pour the mixture over the nutella.
- bake in the oven for 35 minutes or until browned. allow to cool in the pan before slicing.
